Hundreds of Aerial Weapons Rain on Capital Overnight
Children and Policemen Among Casualties as Residential Blocks Collapse
New Delhi: August 1, 2025
Kyiv faced one of its most tragic attacks this year, as a large-scale Russian missile and drone assault resulted in the deaths of 16 individuals, including two children and a police officer. Over 150 civilians were also injured, as reported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Among those hurt were 16 children and six police officers.
Hundreds of Aerial Weapons Deployed In Kyiy
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russian forces launched over 300 drones and missiles, including Shahed attack drones and Iskander-K cruise missiles, targeting multiple districts across Kyiv. While air defenses intercepted the majority of these threats, five missiles and 21 drones managed to hit the city, causing widespread destruction in Solomianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts.
A nine-story apartment building partially collapsed following a direct missile strike, trapping residents under rubble. Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing as emergency crews continue to search for survivors.
Civilian Infrastructure Heavily Damaged
More than 100 buildings, including residential complexes, schools, and medical centers, were damaged or destroyed. Fires erupted in several areas, and thousands of residents were left without electricity and water supplies.
President Zelenskyy strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an “unimaginable scale of terror and brutality.” He also called on the international community to step up their support and provide Ukraine with more advanced air defense systems.
Pattern of Escalating Strikes
This latest strike follows other high-casualty attacks in June and July, where Russian forces used similar large-scale aerial assaults during international summits, resulting in dozens of deaths and significant infrastructure damage.
Defense experts warn that Russia appears to be deliberately overwhelming Ukrainian air defenses, targeting civilian areas to destabilize the capital and disrupt ongoing peace negotiations.
Global Response and UN Security Council Action
International leaders have strongly condemned the attack. Ukraine has called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting to address what officials describe as a deliberate act of terrorism against civilians.
Humanitarian organizations are mobilizing to assist displaced families and provide emergency relief as Kyiv faces mounting devastation from repeated assaults.
