Green Travel Goes Mainstream as Tourists Seek Responsible Getaways
From Solar-Powered Resorts to Zero-Waste Homestays, Sustainability Shapes Hospitality
New Delhi, August 12, 2025
The tourism sector is undergoing a green revolution as eco-tourism is emerging from niche status to mainstream. Travelers are increasingly selecting tourism destinations and accommodations with environmental responsibility, ethical practices and community involvement.
Industry reports indicate a tremendous spike in demand for sustainable accommodations – from solar-powered jungle lodges in Kerala to zero waste beach front resorts in Goa. Many hospitality brands are considering the eco-conscious traveller with initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, plastic-free practices and organic farm-to-table dining.
“Travel has new priorities post-pandemic. Luxury accommodation is no longer a goal, a meaningful, low-impact, culturally rich experience is what people are seeking,” said Suditi Raje, a master’s student studying tourism.
Technology supports sustainability
Hotels and tour operators are working to offer solutions by integrating new technologies for sustainability such as AI-enabled energy management, new composting systems, and carbon foot print calculators for guests. Some destinations are offering carbon offset certificates certified through blockchain directly to travelers.
“Eco-tourism is not about conserving nature, it is about developing strong bonds between travellers and communities” added Lokendra Chauhan a bachelor’ student studying environmental studies.
Community at the Core
Eco-tourism also emphasizes on the local benefits – hiring village guides, purchasing handicrafts, and funding conservation initiatives. Areas like Sikkim and Meghalaya have established homestay programs which combine sustainability, cultural immersion, and beneficiary village incomes, while conserving their traditions.
At a global level, climate change has reached crisis proportions, and experts have indicated eco-tourism will not be merely a trend but the signature pillar of the travel industry in the future. With various levels of government policies supporting sustainable infrastructure development, India has started putting itself in the running, as a place to go for the green traveler.
