Selectors likely to retain Samson–Abhishek opening pair
Shubman Gill, Jaiswal expected to focus on upcoming Test assignments
New Delhi: 18 August 2025
The Indian team will finalize their squad for the Asia Cup 2025 T20Is on Tuesday and there are indications that opener Shubman Gill may not be part of it. The selectors prefer to keep the top-order intact with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, both of whom had done a decent job in their previous outings, leaving Yashasvi Jaiswal as a reserve option for the opening position.
Shubman Gill’s Future in Doubt
Shubman Gill is touted to be one of India’s young talents, but he is unlikely to be a part of the T20 squad this time. According to reports, the selection panel plans to keep the established T20 setup in place, while keeping Gill and Jaiswal available for red-ball matches. With India playing a Test series against the West Indies soon after the Asia Cup, they may want Gill fresh for that series.
The question of Gill’s exclusion has been a topic of discussion among the cricketing gospel. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recognised the dilemma, indicating the different strengths of Gill and Jaiswal but as Aakash Chopra pointed out, he endorses Jaiswal in that format as he is an aggressive, explosive left-handed batter. Others argue, however, that Gill’s consistency and leadership would make him an equally adept option for the short version of the game.
Focus on Consistency
The selectors appear to be looking for consistency leading into a hectic cricket season. Gill’s omission may surprise many but management looks like they want to stick with players who have already adjusted successfully to this format. The official squad announcement on Tuesday should clarify everything, but for now, India appears to be heading into the Asia Cup with its current top order combination.
