Dr. K.A. Paul: “Mercy for Nimisha, Justice for India’s Youth”

Updated At: August 21, 2025 1:10 PM

Dr. K.A. Paul pledges $1 million in ‘blood money’ and urges crackdown on betting apps destroying India’s youth

New Delhi, August 19, 2025

The Supreme Court has admitted the appeal of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who is facing a death sentence in Yemen, and fixed Friday, August 22, 2025, for hearing. Addressing the media at Andhra Pradesh Bhavan in Delhi today, Dr. K.A. Paul described the case as one of “life and death” and called for immediate steps to protect Nimisha and to act against betting apps that are driving Indian youth into crisis.

Dr. Paul said he had received a letter from Nimisha from inside the Yemen prison and appealed directly to the victim’s family. “We will hand over one million dollars in blood money within 30 days, by September 20, and ensure your family’s safety with protection and any desired Country’s citizenship if desired. Also will solve Yemen’ War and help the whole Nations needs with global investments . Please continue to show mercy,” he said.

He linked Nimisha’s case to the growing impact of online betting, recalling the suicide of a young man named Suresh who left behind his wife and six-year-old daughter after falling into debt. “These apps, promoted by national celebrities including cricket icons, are destroying millions of young lives. Even the god of cricket has endorsed them. How many more must die before action is taken?” Dr. Paul asked.

Dr. Paul’s petition seeking a ban on betting apps, which was listed in Court 2 yesterday was adjourned to Friday as the Supreme Court began hearing a Presidential Reference before a five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai. Calling for accountability, Dr. Paul urged Bollywood and Tollywood actors who had promoted betting apps to contribute towards Nimisha’s relief. “Do not send it to me. Donate directly to her official State Bank of India account under the Government of India,” he said.

He also noted that the Enforcement Directorate is investigating several actors and directors in connection with betting apps.
