New Delhi, August 22, 2025:
The Hon’ble Supreme Court today issued notice on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Dr. K.A. Paul, appearing as party in person, seeking a short-term media gag order in connection with the case of Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya, on death row in Yemen.
The matter was heard by a Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, which directed notice to the Attorney General and listed it for further hearing on Monday, August 25.
Dr. Paul clarified his plea, saying, “I am only asking for a three-day or 1 week until Nimisha is released restraint from discussing this matter, as per her request. Let the government speak, but not those individuals who keep making false claims in the media.”
The petition argues that excessive media speculation could obstruct sensitive diplomatic and spiritual negotiations underway, including efforts by Indian officials, community leaders, and religious figures to secure relief through permissible channels under Yemeni law.
Welcoming the Court’s intervention, Dr. Paul said, “This is another important step in my ongoing efforts to ensure justice and national interest are protected.”
Earlier, Dr. Paul had petitioned against betting applications, which led to the Union Government introducing and Parliament unanimously passing a Bill banning such apps. Expressing his gratitude, he said, “I thank the Hon’ble Bench led by Justice Surya Kant, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, and Members of Parliament for their decisive action. This law will protect millions of Indian youth from the harmful effects of betting.”
He also urged film celebrities to act responsibly, noting that endorsements of betting platforms must be completely stopped and do not encourage practices detrimental to society.
