No Farewell, No Explanation: The Mystery Behind Virat Kohli’s Test Retirement

Updated At: August 26, 2025 3:49 PM

Former teammate Manoj Tiwary hints at some hidden reasons behind Virat Kohli’s sudden retirement from Test cricket, leaving fans eager for clarity.

Virat Kohli’s surprising decision to retire from Test cricket earlier this year continues to fuel discussions among fans and cricket analysts alike. Renowned for his incredible fitness and love for the longest format of the game, Kohli’s choice caught many off guard, especially since there were no clear signs that his time in whites was coming to a close.

Manoj Tiwary Suggests There’s More to the Story

Manoj Tiwary, who played alongside Kohli for India, recently shared his thoughts on the situation. He hinted that Kohli might never disclose the true reasons behind his abrupt decision, suggesting that the batting icon may have felt he was “no longer wanted” in the Test team. “I doubt he’ll ever reveal the full story, but I believe he sensed that his contributions weren’t appreciated,” Tiwary said, leaving plenty of room for speculation.

Virat Kohli’s Peak Fitness Was Never the Issue

He went on to add that Kohli’s choice had little to do with his physical or mental state. According to Tiwary, the 36-year-old was still in peak condition and could have continued playing for several more years. “He could have easily played three to four more years of Test cricket if he wanted to,” Tiwary said, underlining how unexpected the decision truly was.

Fans Left Wondering About His Exit

Fans and experts have also been puzzled by the abrupt exit. Kohli had been performing well, maintaining high fitness levels and leading with his trademark intensity. His departure left supporters emotional and questioning what prompted one of India’s greatest Test captains to step away without a farewell series or detailed explanation.

Team Dynamics Could Be a Factor

Analysts believe the answer might lie in the changing dynamics within the Indian team. TTiwary didn’t point fingers at anyone specifically, but he did suggest that the atmosphere surrounding Kohli might have changed. Leadership transitions and selection calls could have contributed to the star batter’s feelings of being sidelined, though nothing has been confirmed officially.

Kohli’s Legacy Beyond Retirement

He, despite maintaining silence on the issue, has continued to be celebrated for his contributions to Indian cricket. Under his captaincy, India achieved iconic Test victories overseas, and his focus on fitness and professionalism transformed the team culture. His achievements remain far greater than the mystery surrounding his retirement.

End of an Era, But Inspiration Lives On

As for Kohli’s legacy, many cricket experts believe it remains intact, no matter the lingering questions. “He’s chosen dignity over drama, and that speaks volumes about his character,” said a former teammate off the record. His departure marks the end of a golden era in Indian Test cricket, but his influence will continue to inspire generations.
