Contrasting realities of two NCR cities highlight gaps in planning, drainage, and governance
Gurgaon found itself in a familiar predicament after heavy rains, with roads turning into rivers, vehicles stranded, and traffic jams stretching for hours. The city’s shaky drainage system and disjointed governance left residents grappling to get around, even for short trips.
In stark contrast, Noida managed to keep things running smoothly during the same downpour. Thanks to its well-planned stormwater system, wider roads, and proactive civic management, Noida has earned a reputation for weathering the monsoon like a champ.
Planned Noida vs. Chaotic Gurgaon
Noida was developed based on a master plan from the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority. They set up drainage, sewage, and road networks before handing out land to developers, laying a solid urban groundwork.
Gurgaon, on the other hand, expanded rapidly without a cohesive plan. Private developers built townships, but the necessary civic infrastructure like drains and sewage lines often lagged behind. This haphazard growth leaves the city exposed every time it rains heavily.
Drainage and Topography: The Deciding Factor
Noida boasts nearly 87 km of stormwater drains that efficiently direct excess rainwater into the Yamuna and Hindon rivers. Pumps placed at underpasses and low-lying areas further help minimize waterlogging.
Gurgaon faces challenges with its natural drainage due to its proximity to the Aravalli hills. Many traditional water channels and ponds have been encroached upon or filled in. With no natural outlets remaining, rainwater quickly pools on the roads after a downpour.
Maintenance and Monsoon Preparedness
Noida gears up for the monsoon season with regular drain desilting, thorough inspections of underpasses, and the strategic deployment of pumps. These proactive measures keep the city functioning even during heavy rainfall.
Gurgaon, however, battles clogged drains, unfinished civic projects, and poor coordination among various agencies. The lack of preventive measures turns every rainstorm into a struggle for residents.
