New Delhi: 31 July 2024
Atishi, the minister of revenue for Delhi, announced on Wednesday that a bill governing coaching centers in the nation’s capital would be introduced by the Delhi government. This comes after a coaching center in the city’s Old Rajinder Nagar district lost three students to basement flooding on Saturday.
Atishi stated that in the wake of the Rajinder Nagar tragedy, 200 institutes have received notifications and the basements of thirty coaching centers have been blocked. She added that in order to create rules for coaching centers, the Delhi government will appoint officials and students from coaching hubs to a committee.
“In addition to the interim inquiry report, MCD has also issued a preliminary report. Two important details about the coaching center incident emerged: first, the drain, which is the cause of the waterlogging in that region, was encroached upon by all of the nearby coaching centers, preventing water from draining properly. The other thing is that the way coaching centers were setting up libraries and conducting classes in the basement was completely illegal. The junior engineer who was in charge of the drain there and making sure there was no encroachment happening was permanently terminated from MCD.” the Delhi Minister stated.

“There is a suspension for the assistant engineer; Seven days from now, a magistratal report is anticipated, with harsh penalties for those found guilty; the coaching centers that had unlawfully encroached upon sewers have been demolished; and harsh measures have been implemented against the coaching centers for the last three days for setting up libraries and holding sessions in the basement,” she continued.
Tanya Soni from Telangana, Nevin Dalwin from Kerala, and Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh were the 3 IAS candidates who lost their lives on Saturday night when heavy rains flooded Rau’s IAS Study Circle’s basement.
The Delhi minister had noted in a message to Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar on Monday the postponement of the filing of the report of the magisterial probe related to the event. Additionally, she had instructed him to turn in the report by 10 p.m.
