Centre urges media to follow guidelines for national security, warns of legal action

Pahalgam Attack: Following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory for all media outlets and digital platforms. The advisory asks them to avoid broadcasting live updates or visuals related to defence operations or troop movements.

The government emphasized the importance of keeping military operations secret to protect security personnel and ensure successful missions. The advisory warns that releasing such information too soon can put lives at risk and help enemies.

Citing past incidents like the Kargil War, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking, the ministry highlighted the dangers of unregulated media coverage. It reminded media outlets that under the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, live coverage of anti-terrorism operations is prohibited. Media should only share information after receiving official updates once the operation is over.

The government also stated that any violation of these rules could lead to legal action. Media groups and digital news platforms have been asked to monitor and promote responsible reporting practices.

The ministry concluded with a clear message: “Media and digital platforms play a key role in national security. It is our collective responsibility to protect defence operations from being compromised.”

This advisory comes after the deadly attack in Pahalgam, which has sparked concerns over media’s role in covering such situations. Experts have long called for stricter guidelines during defence operations to avoid helping the enemy.
