AI-Generated Ghibli-Style art sparks debate among artists and fans

Concerns rise over creativity, ethics, and the future of art

A wave of AI-generated images mimicking the unique styles of Studio Ghibli in recent weeks has sparked a deep conversation among artists, fans, and technologists. All this started when the Ghibli style animated portrait started trending on social media, with every other person posting their pictures in this unique style.

These OpenAI’s ChatGPT image generation raises a multitude of question regarding creativity, ethics, and the prospects of AI art gaining a foothold in the art world.

Originally Ghibli is an animation style that was founded by animator Hayao Miyazaki as Studio Ghibli. The studio is famous for its hand-drawn, emotion-driven animations. Its aesthetic has enchanted audiences around the world, and people are going crazy over it. People have been using AI tools to change their own photographs or even well-known images into works in the “Ghibli style” and sharing those renderings across social media.

But there is another side of the story as well, many artists consider this trend to be a diminishing of human creativity. Many has expressed their disappointment, saying that the AI-created images look nice, but the work excluded the craftsmanship and specificity of the original Ghibli art. Many have conveyed concern that, with AI-produced art, those joyful experiences are lost because it lacks the spirit and authenticity of human-made art.

In addition to aesthetics, generating Ghibli’s style using AI raises ethical and legal issues. Some argue that training an AI model or other technical method to create artwork based on existing artwork without permission violates intellectual property rights and takes advantage of artistic labor. Within the creative community, there is a growing concern about the commercialization and appropriation of distinct styles by AI and the failure to provide attribution or compensation to the original artist.

While AI opens the door for creative expression, the discussion regarding Ghibli-style art by AI displays that a balance is important. We need to be aware of technological advances and the value of human creativity. Since AI will continue to change and evolve, we need to have a conversation with technological leaders, artists, and lawyers about the challenges that occur at the intersection of technology and creativity.
