New Delhi, 23 July 2024—

The Apparel Made-Ups & Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC) and bluesign® are set to launch the “Foundation to Apparel Sustainability” eLearning course to promote sustainable practices in the Indian apparel sector.

AMHSSC advances skill development in the apparel industry. bluesign® sets standards for sustainable textiles, working with brands, manufacturers, and suppliers to minimize environmental and social impacts. This course will combine their expertise to teach sustainable practices.

The course will align with global goals like eradicating poverty, promoting health, and achieving gender equality. It will address environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions, water scarcity, pollution, and social issues like working conditions and labor rights.

It will benefit students and professionals. Students will gain practical skills for leading sustainability, while professionals will enhance their understanding of responsible manufacturing and alternative materials.

Key topics will include sustainable fashion principles, the transition from fast fashion to slow fashion, sustainable design, and the circular economy. Participants will learn about recycled and organic fibers, industry challenges, and upcoming global sustainability legislation.

The course will cover best available techniques (BAT) like mechanical and chemical recycling, upcycling, downcycling, and apparel reuse technologies. Advanced methods will include anaerobic digestion, fermentation, composting, and converting apparel waste into building materials. Consumer education will be emphasized to drive demand for sustainable fashion.

Padma Shri Dr. A Sakthivel, Chairman of AMHSSC, said, “This course addresses the urgent need for sustainability in fashion and equips our industry to meet global standards.”

By staying informed about sustainability legislation and BAT, industry professionals will navigate the evolving fashion landscape, reduce environmental impact, and meet consumer demand for sustainable products.

Dr. Vijay Kumar Yadav, CEO of AMHSSC, added, “This course is a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the Indian apparel industry.”

Mr. Daniel Rufenacht, CEO of bluesign technologies ag, commented, “We are happy to collaborate with AMHSSC to equip the industry with sustainable practices.”
