West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a key figure in the recently formed Opposition coalition, has responded sharply to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remark about the ‘INDIA’ alliance. Shah had urged parties in the Opposition not to support the Aam Aadmi Party’s proposed law that would change control over officers in Delhi. In reaction, Banerjee emphasized that their coalition stands for the benefit of the country. She also accused the BJP of endorsing violence and expressed her confidence in the alliance’s victory in the upcoming national elections.
Speaking in Parliament, Shah defended the government’s bill to counter a Supreme Court ruling in favor of the Delhi government’s control over officers. He called on the Opposition to focus on Delhi’s concerns rather than just their alliance. Banerjee supported Shah’s statement, asserting that a win for Delhi equates to a triumph for the INDIA alliance.
Banerjee highlighted the widespread presence of the INDIA alliance across the nation and stressed the importance of its victory to safeguard the country from potential disasters, communal tensions, and unemployment. She criticized the BJP’s approach, accusing them of promoting “saffronization” and relying on tactics of terror.
Shah’s participation in the parliamentary discussion on the Delhi services bill further underscored the divisions between the ruling party and the Opposition. Following his address in the Rajya Sabha, the Delhi services bill was later passed in the Lok Sabha.
