Apple is set to introduce an AI-powered Smart Replies feature for its native Mail app, according to a recent report. This new feature will leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to generate instant responses to emails. The tech giant is expected to reveal this feature at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 on June 10. Additionally, Siri will also incorporate this Smart Replies feature, enabling it to draft and respond to emails on behalf of users. These AI advancements are reportedly being developed under Apple’s Project BlackPearl.
Major Upgrade for Apple’s Mail App
AppleInsider reports that the Mail app is slated for significant enhancements. Sources indicate that the Smart Replies feature will help users quickly respond to emails by generating replies automatically. Users can also adjust the tone of these replies, making them more professional, conversational, or friendly as needed.
Additional Upgrades in Mail App
The pre-release version of Apple’s new operating systems hints at further improvements for the Mail app. The app’s search function is set to become more sophisticated, incorporating data from Contacts, locations, and on-device documents for a more nuanced search experience. These enhancements are powered by the Ajax large language model (LLM), Apple’s yet-to-be-announced on-device AI model.
Email Categorization Feature
The Mail app may also gain the ability to categorize emails based on their content. This could involve machine learning technology to sort emails into predefined categories such as Commerce, News, Other, Promotions, Social, and Transactions. This feature could be particularly beneficial for users who receive a high volume of emails, including organizational accounts.
Integration with Siri
Both the Smart Replies and email categorization features are expected to be integrated with Siri. While the use case for email categorization in Siri is unclear, the Smart Replies feature will allow users to verbally command Siri to generate AI-based email responses.
Broader AI Enhancements
In addition to these Mail app upgrades, previous reports suggest that Apple might introduce AI features for other apps such as Siri, the Photos app, the Notes app, and more.
