A Delhi Court has extended the judicial custody of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal until July 3 in connection with a corruption case related to the Delhi liquor policy. Arvind Kejriwal has been in jail since 1st April, 2024.
The Enforcement Directorate arrested Kejriwal on March 21 on allegations of corruption involving the now-cancelled Delhi liquor policy.
On May 10, the Supreme Court granted him interim bail to allow him to campaign for elections. During this period, the AAP leader held numerous rallies nationwide before returning to jail on June 2.
The investigation agency alleges that Kejriwal played a significant role in creating the liquor policy and accepting bribes in exchange for liquor licenses. It claims that the AAP received kickbacks amounting to ₹100 crore, which were then used to finance its election campaigns in Goa and Punjab.
Both AAP and Kejriwal have denied all accusations, describing the arrest and case as “political vendetta.”
The arrest has also sparked a political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the opposition INDIA bloc, led by the Congress and including AAP.
Following Kejriwal’s arrest, his wife, Sunita Kejriwal, has emerged as a prominent party figure. She delivered a passionate speech at a political rally attended by members of the Congress-led INDIA bloc, of which AAP is a part.
Sunita Kejriwal’s rising political presence has led to speculation that she may pursue a full-time political career, especially with the Delhi Assembly election approaching next year.
