Don’t chase glamour without knowing the ‘Why’: BAIDA Actor Shobhit Sujay speaks to Mumbai media students

After the success of the sci-fi supernatural thriller BAIDA, actor and former journalist Shobhit Sujay has been drawing attention among young audiences. Known for his portrayal of the endearing village character ‘Golu’, Sujay recently met with media students in Mumbai for an interactive session focused on career choices and practical challenges in the field.

The session was hosted by the School of Broadcasting and Communication, aiming to address questions that often trouble students pursuing careers in media, journalism, film, and communication.

Speaking about the purpose of the interaction, Shobit Sujay said, “Choosing the right career shapes your future. Just as we don’t buy a car solely based on whether it runs on petrol, diesel, or CNG, choosing a career shouldn’t be based on a single factor—especially not glamour. It’s important to ask yourself why you want to pursue a certain path. Too often, students are confused about switching careers midway or unsure about what lies ahead after studying media. Now that I’m working as an actor, I feel a responsibility to be someone students can talk to openly when they’re unsure about their own choices.”

Astha Puri, Academic Head at the School of Broadcasting and Communication, added, “Our philosophy is ‘Education for Evolution’. We want our students—future media professionals, filmmakers, actors, and journalists—to learn from lived experiences, not just textbooks. Being able to ask honest questions and get clear answers from professionals makes a real difference. We’re thankful to Shobhit for engaging with the students so candidly.”

Students raised a number of questions about career, dreams, and long-term goals. While some were curious about the financial and glamorous aspects of the industry, others asked about building a career in fashion PR. In response, Sujay stressed that entering any field purely for its appeal is risky. “If you don’t love acting, you won’t last in the audition lines. If you choose journalism just to be on screen, the hard work behind the camera will start to weigh you down,” he said.

Shobhit Sujay made his Bollywood debut in March with BAIDA as both an actor and assistant director. Before that, he received praise for his work in OTT and YouTube projects such as the horror-comedy Chai Patti, short film Chinta Mani, and the web series Detective Boomrah. Prior to acting, he spent nearly 20 years working as a senior journalist in major Indian newsrooms.
