Basant Panchami 2025: Date, timing, and Saraswati Puja significance

Basant Panchami, popularly Saraswati Jayanti, is one of those most celebrated Hindu festivals dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, patroness of knowledge, learning, and arts. The day is held to mark the birth anniversary of Maa Saraswati, thus giving it special significance for students and scholars who commingle on it to beg her best blessings for academic success.

Significance of Basant Panchami

The festival heralds the advent of spring, which is why it is called indeed ‘Basant’ (spring) Panchami. The celebration is observed on the fifth (Panchami) day of the month of Magha and typically falls around the January-February transition of the Gregorian calendar.

Thus, the day that awaits the festive mood brings worshippers to clothe themselves in yellow, adorn their homes with yellow flowers, and gorge upon delicacies created for this significant day. Yellow is considered as the color of wisdom, knowledge, and prosperity, which is another adjacent embrace of Goddess knowledge Saraswati. Many chants hymns, shlokas, and Saraswati Vandana invoke deity knowledge and enlightenment.

Though Basant Panchami is more of festival enjoyed rather than a public holiday, the festival is widely acclaimed all over India. While some states like Haryana, Odisha, Tripura, and West Bengal observe it as a public holiday, the event is celebrated with pomp in schools, temples, and cultural institutions.
