Bhojpuri singer Pawan Singh has confirmed that he will be entering the Lok Sabha elections after withdrawing from the race just a week ago. This announcement came through on Wednesday, marking a reversal of his decision to step back from contesting under the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) banner in Asansol, West Bengal. Singh made the declaration on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his intention to run for the Lok Sabha.
In a turnaround on Wednesday, Singh tweeted, “I will contest elections to fulfill the promise made to the people and my mother. I seek your blessings and cooperation. Jai Mata Di.” Previously, Singh had decided against participating in the Lok Sabha Polls after the Trinamool Congress accused him of making derogatory remarks about Bengali women in some of his songs.
On March 3, 2024, Singh, who was initially listed as one of the BJP’s 195 candidates, expressed gratitude to the party’s leadership but cited personal reasons for withdrawing from the Asansol candidacy.
Currently, the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency is represented by veteran actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha of the Trinamool Congress. Sinha will be vying for re-election from the same seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Regarding Singh’s initial decision to withdraw, Sinha commented, “I don’t know him personally but have heard that he is a great artist and singer. Some of our people know him well. It’s their (BJP’s) internal affair.”
