Coca-Cola has decided to recall its drinks in several European countries after discovering higher-than-acceptable levels of chlorate, a chemical that could be harmful. This recall affects cans and glass bottles of beverages sent to Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands since November 2024.
Health Risks and Affected Products
Chlorate is a byproduct of chlorine-based disinfectants used to treat water and food. When consumed in large amounts, it can affect thyroid functions, especially in children and infants. The affected drinks include Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Tropico, and Minute Maid.
By December 2024, some of these products had already been sold in Britain. While the company has assured customers that the health risks are low, it is still taking the matter seriously and working to fix the issue.
Coca-Cola ’s Response and Safety Measures
Coca-Cola stated that independent experts reviewed the situation and concluded that the health risks are very minimal. Despite this, the company is recalling the affected batches as a precaution and is working with authorities. Although the exact number of contaminated products is unclear, Coca-Cola acknowledged the issue is larger than expected.
The contamination was discovered during regular checks at Coca-Cola’s factory in Ghent, Belgium. After the issue was found, nearly all affected products were recalled. Company stressed that consumer safety is its top priority and that it is committed to maintaining high-quality standards. Health authorities in the affected countries are closely monitoring the situation as the recall continues.
