New Delhi : The Congress clarified on Saturday that the “Loktantra Bachao Rally” organized by the INDIA bloc on March 31 at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan is not focused on defending any individual but rather on safeguarding democracy and the Constitution of India.
Speaking at a press conference, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized that the opposition bloc’s rally is not centered around any particular person but is an endeavor to uphold India’s democratic principles and Constitution.
“This rally is not about any individual. Hence, it is termed the Loktantra Bachao Rally. It is not affiliated with one party; approximately 27-28 parties are participating in it. All members of the INDIA jan bandhan will join the rally,” stated Ramesh.
He further mentioned that party leader Mallikarjun Kharge and senior figure Rahul Gandhi, along with other leaders, will address the rally.
Ramesh highlighted that the rally will convey a “strong message” to the prime minister’s residence at Lok Kalyan Marg that the time of the BJP-led government is running out.
Second phase of INDIA bloc’s election campaign
Ramesh noted that the Indian National Developmental Inclusive alliance (INDIA) initiated its Lok Sabha election campaign in Mumbai on March 17, and the rally would mark its second phase.
He added that the rally will also underscore solidarity and unity among the members of the bloc.
Ramesh outlined that opposition leaders will raise concerns about issues such as escalating prices, record-high unemployment, economic disparities, social divisions, and injustices against farmers during the rally.
Targeting the opposition
He also highlighted the issue of the government allegedly targeting the opposition through the “misuse of central agencies,” stating that several chief ministers and ministers have been arrested in a move to politically target opposition parties.
According to Ramesh, this indicates the prime minister’s intent to weaken opposition parties both politically and financially.
Raising concerns
Moreover, Ramesh mentioned that the rally will address issues such as alleged “extortion” through electoral bonds and the Congress being subjected to “tax terrorism.”
He stated that the primary objective of the rally is to protect the Constitution, which is perceived to be under threat with BJP leaders expressing intentions to rewrite it.
Ramesh listed several leaders from various political parties who will participate in the rally, highlighting the significance of the event.
The comments by Congress regarding Sunday’s rally hold significance amid claims by AAP leaders that the rally is primarily focused on protesting against the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate.
