Primary objective of the workshop was to address and prevent the degradation of aquatic ecosystems in Bihar caused by various factors

A workshop has been organized under the auspices of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone-IV, Patna, Bihar. The workshop focused on the conservation and development of Bihar’s aquatic ecosystems. Its main objective was to prevent the degradation of these ecosystems caused by various factors and to identify the role of Agricultural Science Centers (KVKs) in this effort.
Dr. Ranjay Kumar Singh, Assistant Director General (Agricultural Extension) at ICAR, New Delhi, addressed the 25 scientists from the KVKs across the state. He mentioned that ICAR, in collaboration with Dr. Eliner Jeiv of York University, is conducting research on aquatic ecosystems and the livelihoods of communities living around them. Dr. Singh emphasized that the Government of India, as a signatory to the Ramsar Convention, is working on various plans and policies for the development and conservation of aquatic ecosystems.

Under the leadership of Dr. Anjani Kumar Singh, Director of the Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Patna, about 25 scientists from KVKs presented an analysis of the aquatic ecosystems across 18 districts in Bihar. They also assessed the current status of agricultural systems and community livelihoods in these areas.
The workshop revealed that Bihar’s aquatic ecosystems are facing degradation due to climate change, geographical shifts, and socio-economic changes. Scientists, directors, and the chief guest emphasized that the degradation could be mitigated by enhancing community capacities and incorporating specific technical measures.
Presenting research on aquatic ecosystems in Eastern Uttar Pradesh conducted with York University, the chief guest urged the inclusion of these findings in KVK activities. The workshop concluded with a focus on increasing collective participation to empower aquatic ecosystems and associated livelihoods through new strategies.
