The 18-year-old chess player sets a new record in Indian sports honors
D. Gukesh, the youngest-ever World Chess Champion, has been named as the recipient of the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award for 2024. This marks a significant milestone in the history of India’s highest sports award, as Gukesh becomes the youngest player to ever receive the honor. Born on May 29, 2006, Gukesh’s recognition at the age of 18 surpasses that of shooter Abhinav Bindra, who previously held the record by winning the award at 18 years old in 2001.
Gukesh’s achievement places him among the elite group of athletes recognized by the Indian government for their contributions to sports. He becomes the second chess player after Viswanathan Anand to receive the Khel Ratna, further cementing the growing stature of chess in India.
In addition to Gukesh, the Government of India has announced that shooter Manu Bhaker, Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh, and Paralympic gold medalist Praveen Kumar will also receive the Khel Ratna Award for 2024. These athletes have been recognized for their outstanding performances in their respective disciplines.
