A 70-year-old man named Jawahar Chaudhary, who was the main witness in his son’s murder case, was shot and killed while taking a morning walk in the Begusarai district. The incident occurred yesterday, just days before he was scheduled to appear in court to testify in his son’s murder case.
Jawahar Chaudhary’s son, Neeraj, had been allegedly killed by his own second son in 2021 due to a property dispute.
The elderly man was supposed to give his testimony in court against the accused, who is presently incarcerated, in a matter of days.
There is suspicion that his murder could be connected to the ongoing case, according to police sources.
This marks the second such incident in the span of a week. In the previous week, a journalist was fatally shot outside his residence in the Araria district of Bihar, just before he was due to give his testimony in his brother’s murder case.
The journalist, Vimal Kumar Yadav, was associated with the ‘Dainik Jagran’ newspaper and was shot by unidentified assailants who knocked on his door and called out his name at approximately 5:30 am. He was shot in the chest upon opening the door.
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, according to the police.
Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, described the incidents as tragic and directed officials to thoroughly investigate the crimes. He expressed his disbelief at how a journalist could be killed in such a manner.
The BJP criticized the Bihar government, suggesting that the incidents indicated a threat to democracy in the state. The state’s BJP president, Samrat Choudhary, claimed that criminals were freely operating while innocent citizens, including journalists and even police personnel, were being killed.
