Kamal Haasan was the inspiration behind “Thug Life”, Says Mani Ratnam

Director Mani Ratnam recently shared that the idea for his upcoming film Thug Life came to him while thinking about Kamal Haasan. Speaking at a promotional event in Mumbai, he said that the film’s story started taking shape from that very moment.

Mani Ratnam explained that a film’s scale depends on its story. He added that working with the right cast and crew makes the process even more exciting, and he felt lucky to have such a talented team on board.

Kamal Haasan also looked back on his long friendship with Mani Ratnam. He recalled how both of them grew up in the same neighbourhood, where their love for cinema brought them together. He said they often visited film sets just to watch actors and directors at work.

The event was attended by the full Thug Life team, including A.R. Rahman, Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, and Ashok Selvan. The cast spoke to the media and shared their excitement about the film.

Thug Life is scheduled to hit theatres worldwide on June 5, 2025.
