Hemant Soren, who was arrested in January for money laundering, has received bail from the High Court. The Enforcement Directorate arrested Mr. Soren, alleging that he led a scheme involving fictitious transactions and forged documents to acquire a large tract of land worth several crore rupees.
Mr. Soren resigned as Chief Minister on January 31, just hours after the Enforcement Directorate began an extensive questioning session and informed him of his impending arrest. He refused to accept the arrest memo until he had resigned from his position to avoid being the first sitting Chief Minister to be arrested.
Mr. Soren is accused of illegally acquiring 8.86 acres of land in Ranchi.
