Google Translate, introducing 110 new languages powered by the PaLM 2 large language model (LLM).
New Delhi: 28 June 2024
Google exists to bring the globe closer together. It believes in eradicating the language barrier that divides humanity. With this goal in mind, Google announced the most significant extension of its translation service, Google Translate, introducing 110 new languages powered by the PaLM 2 large language model (LLM). With this latest feature, Google Translate now supports over 1,000 languages.
According to Google, this update will empower over 614 million people throughout the world and provide translation services to almost 8% of the global population.
“A senior software engineer at Google wrote a blog post detailing how the service facilitates connections and enhances understanding of the world by eliminating language barriers.”
In 2022, we introduced 24 new languages utilizing Zero-Shot Machine Translation, a technique that teaches a machine learning model to translate into another language without ever seeing an example. We’re constantly implementing the newest technology to make this service more accessible to more people. Additionally, we unveiled the 1,000 Languages Initiative, a pledge to develop artificial intelligence models that will support the 1,000 most widely spoken languages worldwide.
The languages that have recently been added cover a wide variety instead than being exclusive to one area. It includes lesser-known tongues as NKo and Tamazight in addition to commonly spoken languages like Cantonese and Punjabi (Shahmukhi). Google Translate is actively embracing the diverse range of languages present in the world.

The potent PaLM 2 large language model is the primary force behind Google’s expansion. There is now less of a gap between languages with similar roots thanks to this LLM’s effective acquisition of related languages. This upgrade may prove advantageous, particularly in areas with a multitude of dialects, like the Hindi language family.
Along with supporting all of the most widely spoken languages in the world, this upgrade is in line with Google’s ambitious 1,000 Languages Initiative.
