Fourth COVID Wave: New variant may evade vaccines, effects could last up to 28 Days

New Delhi: COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise in India, sparking concerns of a potential fourth COVID wave. According to the latest data from the Union Ministry of Health, there are currently 1,348 active cases across the country, with 15 deaths reported so far, six of them in Maharashtra alone.
Health experts believe that a new COVID variant is driving the recent surge. However, they have urged the public not to panic.
“Situation likely to remain under control”: IIT Kanpur Director
Professor Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, stated that India has seen multiple COVID spikes since 2022, most of which were linked to the emergence of new variants.
“These variants have not led to any severe outbreaks. I believe this time, too, the situation will remain under control. There’s no need to panic,” he said.
Possible fourth COVID wave may last 21–28 Days
Prof. Gyaneshwar Chaubey, a genetics expert from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), said that if a fourth wave does occur, its impact is expected to last for about 21 to 28 days.
“It is unlikely to be as deadly as the second wave,” he added. “Though the wave may be short, precaution is still essential.”
Vaccines less effective against the new variant
Prof. Chaubey also cautioned that even vaccinated individuals need to stay vigilant.
“The current vaccines may not fully prevent the spread of this new variant. However, the immunity developed from vaccination still helps the body fight the virus,” he explained.
Basic precautions still crucial
Health experts continue to emphasize mask usage, avoiding crowded places, and maintaining hand hygiene. Individuals with pre-existing conditions or those in older age groups are advised to exercise particular caution.
The government is closely monitoring the situation and has urged citizens to remain calm yet vigilant. An official advisory recommends following all COVID-appropriate behavior to avoid unnecessary health risks.
