Bengaluru’s Traffic Woes Eased with 190-Km Tunnel Road Project

Bengaluru is set to receive a 190-kilometer tunnel road project aimed at alleviating its notorious traffic problems. Often referred to as India’s Silicon Valley, Bengaluru has become infamous for its traffic gridlock, exacerbated recently by protests related to the Cauvery water dispute. In response to this pressing issue, Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, D K Shivakumar, has unveiled plans for this extensive tunnel road project and announced that the state government will open public tenders for it within 45 days.
Speaking at a press conference held at Vidhana Soudha, Shivakumar stated, “We have proposed the construction of a 190-kilometer tunnel road to address Bengaluru’s traffic congestion, and eight qualified companies are on board. These companies will conduct a feasibility study, determining factors such as the road’s width (four or six lanes), its starting and ending points, and whether it should span across the entire city. Due to the project’s immense scale and funding requirements, it will be executed in multiple phases.”
He revealed that the tunnel road is planned to cover sections of Bellary Road, Old Madras Road, Esteem Mall Junction to Mekhri Circle, Miller Road, Chalukya Circle, Trinity Circle, Sarjapur Road, Hosur Road, Kanakapura Road to Krishna Rao Park, Mysore Road to Sirsi Circle, Magadi Road, Tumakuru Road to Yeshwantpur Junction, Outer Ring Road, Goraguntepalya, KR Puram, and Silk Board areas.
Shivakumar emphasized the urgency of the project by citing the recent severe traffic congestion on Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road. He disclosed that he has engaged in discussions with relevant officials and traffic police to address this pressing concern.
