“Is it so Difficult to Be a Patriot…?” Salman Khurshid Sparks Political Storm from Abroad with Article 370 Remarks

Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid has once again landed in the political spotlight. His recent remarks on Article 370, made during an overseas visit, have triggered a fresh political storm back home in India.
Speaking from Jakarta, Khurshid said that the abrogation of Article 370 had led to prosperity and democratic progress in Jammu and Kashmir. He further stated that the long-held perception that the region is somehow separate from the rest of India has now been broken.
“We now have a democratic government in Jammu and Kashmir. People participated enthusiastically in the elections, and development is visibly taking place,” he said.
Domestic political turmoil follows
While Khurshid’s remarks appeared to praise the outcomes of the Centre’s controversial move, they quickly became a flashpoint in India’s political discourse. Several opposition parties have questioned Khurshid’s stance, calling it inconsistent with the Congress party’s historical position on the matter.
Amid mounting criticism, Khurshid posted an emotional message on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“At a time when we are on a global mission against terrorism, it is painful that some people back home are questioning our political loyalty. Is it so difficult to be a patriot?”
Representing india abroad
Currently, Khurshid is on a foreign visit as part of an All-Party Delegation, representing India’s stance against terrorism on international platforms.
“India is speaking in one voice — no more terrorism. The world needs a unified global response to this menace if we want peace and prosperity. We can say with confidence: We shall overcome,” he stated.
Political reactions still unfolding
Khurshid’s comments have divided political opinion. Some interpret them as a departure from the Congress party’s traditional policy, while others view them as a pragmatic and nationally aligned position. The final political fallout will likely depend on how the Congress party officially responds and how other political actors frame the narrative in the coming days.
