Suspension of 15 MPs, Including 9 Congress Members, Due to Disruptive Conduct in Parliament

In a recent development, 15 Members of Parliament, comprising 9 Congress members, have been suspended for displaying “unruly behavior” during the parliamentary proceedings. This decision was implemented on Thursday, with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi initiating a motion for their suspension.

The motion was presented following a briefing on the actions taken in response to a security breach incident that occurred the previous day. In that incident, two individuals breached security and entered the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitor’s gallery.

Pralhad Joshi introduced the suspension motion when Lok Sabha resumed proceedings at 2 pm, following an earlier adjournment. The motion targeted the suspension of five Congress MPs—S Jothimani, Ramya Haridas, TN Prathapan, Hibi Eden, and Dean Kuriakose—for the remainder of the winter session, concluding on December 22.

It is noteworthy that the motion was introduced while BJD’s Bhartruhari Mahtab presided over the chair, amid strong slogans from Opposition members.

During his address to the House, Joshi informed members that Speaker Om Birla had written a letter to the Home Secretary, requesting a high-level probe into the security breach incident. The investigation has already been initiated. Joshi cited historical instances of similar incidents, such as individuals throwing papers from the visitors’ gallery, and urged Opposition members not to politicize the sensitive issue.
