Women participation in contract-based tech roles rises to 14% in 2024: Report

New Delhi: India has witnessed a significant rise in women’s participation in technology roles within non-tech sectors over the past few years. According to a new report by TeamLease Digital, the women participation in contract-based tech roles has increased from a mere 1.90% in 2020 to 14% in 2024, marking a notable shift towards inclusivity in the workforce.
Women entering traditionally male-dominated sectors
The report also highlights that overall female representation in these sectors has grown from 9.51% in 2020 to 27.98% in 2024. This upward trend points to increasing female participation in technology-driven roles in sectors that were once dominated by men.

This progress is attributed to a combination of digital innovation, diversity-focused hiring, and progressive workplace policies.
Sector-wise women participation
While the overall growth is promising, the report draws attention to persistent gender disparities across specific sectors:
- Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI): 46.88%
- Life Sciences and Healthcare: 29.58%
- Manufacturing and Engineering: 4.82%
- Energy Sector: 6.25%
Women still underrepresented in leadership roles
The report raises concerns over the low representation of women in senior technology roles:
- Senior-level positions: 4.86%
- Mid-level positions: 5.14%
- Entry-level positions: 3.03%
While there has been a slight improvement between 2023 and 2024, the numbers suggest only gradual progress toward gender parity.
