An Indian Independent Music Video About Mothers Is Quietly Making History

Updated At: November 27, 2025 3:32 PM

Kovid Mittal’s heartfelt music film Meri Maa is rewriting independent music history, winning 15 international awards and earning prestigious Oscar® and London Short Film Award selections.

New Delhi: 27 November 2025

In a groundbreaking moment for India’s independent music landscape, a deeply emotional tribute to motherhood has captured international attention and turned into an unexpected global sensation. Meri Maa, a music video conceptualized by filmmaker and actor Kovid Mittal under the label Get High on Music, has now won 15 international awards across categories such as direction, acting, cinematography, and sound.

The film has also achieved the rare honor of being officially selected for the Oscars® short film category, along with a spot at the London Short Film Awards — a remarkable feat for a purely independent Indian project with no big studio backing, no commercial star power, and no massive budget.

What began as a simple, heartfelt homage to mothers everywhere has transformed into a cultural movement that is resonating across borders.

🎬 Watch the Film Here:

A Cultural Movement — Beyond a Music Video

The overwhelming global response to Meri Maa has inspired the creators to expand the project further. The team is now re-shooting the music video in six Indian languages, ensuring that each version reflects the unique culture, traditions, and mother–child relationship of its region.

These aren’t mere translations — every version is being reimagined with new visuals, fresh storytelling, and region-specific emotional nuances.

Adding to the momentum, a male version of the song is set to release next week, promising a new emotional depth to the narrative.

A Rare Achievement in Indian Independent Music

Independent films from India rarely receive such widespread international recognition, especially projects centered on universal emotions rather than commercial formulas. Meri Maa’s global rise proves that genuine storytelling, rooted emotion, and sincerity can transcend language and industry boundaries.

“This isn’t just a song — it’s an emotion we all share.
When we created Meri Maa, we never imagined it would travel the world.
It’s truly humbling to see motherhood resonate universally,”
— Kovid Mittal, Director & Lead Actor
