Indore has been recognized as the cleanest city in India, and Maharashtra has been named the best performing state, according to the Central government’s annual cleanliness survey. The announcement, which took place on Thursday, revealed that Indore and Surat claimed the top spots for the cleanest cities, with Navi Mumbai retaining the third position. Notably, Indore has secured the title of the cleanest city for the seventh consecutive year.
In the ‘Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023,’ Maharashtra was honored as the best performing state, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards at an event, where Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and others addressed the audience.
The Annual Cleanliness Survey also recognized Chandigarh for having the best safety standards for sanitation workers with the Safaimitra Surakshit Shehar award. Varanasi was acknowledged as the cleanest “Ganga town” in its respective category.
It is worth noting that the annual awards were initiated in 2016 as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban. The 2023 awards encompassed 4,416 urban local bodies, 61 cantonments, and 88 Ganga towns.
