New Delhi: The Delhi Police have lodged an FIR against Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra following her allegedly “offensive” social media comments targeting National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma.
Mahua Moitra, representing Krishnanagar for TMC, made the derogatory remark in reply to the footage of NCW chief visiting women injured in a stampede in Hathras, UP.
In a now-deleted post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Moitra shared a video of Rekha Sharma arriving at the scene, with the caption, “She is too busy holding up her boss’s pajamas.”
This prompted the NCW to respond on X (twitter), condemning the comment as “outrageous” and a violation of a woman’s right to dignity. The commission noted that the remark contravenes Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
The FIR, filed by the Cyber Unit of the Delhi Police Special Cell, cites Section 79 of the newly enforced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as the basis for the charge.
The original post featured a man holding an umbrella and walking behind the NCW chief, which sparked the controversy.
