Global stars like Michael Jackson, Winnie Harlow, have bravely embraced their vitiligo, challenging beauty standards and inspiring millions
New Delhi, November 19, 2024
At the Miss Universe 2024 pageant in Mexico City that was held on November 17, Logina Salah made history as the first contestant with vitiligo to compete on the global stage. Representing Egypt, she also achieved a landmark for her country by reaching the Top 30—a feat never accomplished before in the pageant’s 73-year history.
And with this Salah has joined a list of global icons who have lived with the vitiligo. It is a long-term skin condition characterized by patches of depigmented skin that affects millions worldwide. It occurs when the pigment-producing cells in the skin are destroyed, potentially due to autoimmune factors.
Here are the big names associated with the Vitiligo
Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson, arguably the most famous individual with vitiligo, revealed his diagnosis in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey. Jackson’s evolving skin tone, once a subject of intense speculation, was later understood as part of his journey with the condition. His openness about vitiligo helped destigmatize the disease, though it also sparked widespread conversation about beauty standards and identity.

Canadian supermodel Winnie Harlow, diagnosed with vitiligo at the age of four, turned her childhood struggles into a powerful message of self-love and acceptance. With her striking looks and unshakable confidence, Harlow has walked for top brands like Dior and Fendi, graced numerous magazine covers, and become a global advocate for diversity in fashion.
Chandrababu Naidu
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is another notable figure reportedly living with vitiligo. While he has rarely spoken about it publicly, reports suggest it developed amidst his demanding political career.
