Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty will soon add another prestigious accolade to his name, as he is set to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award—the highest honor in Indian cinema—during the 70th National Film Awards on October 8. This award celebrates Chakraborty’s remarkable contributions to the Indian film industry, where he has been a dominant figure for over 40 years. The news was shared by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the selection. The decision was made by a special jury that praised Chakraborty for his versatility and profound influence on Indian cinema.
Affectionately called “Mithu Da” by his fans, Chakraborty has carved out an illustrious career that spans across a wide range of genres. Earlier this year, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors. Additionally, he has won three National Film Awards and holds a unique record in the Limca Book of Records for leading 19 film releases in 1989.

Mithun Chakraborty’s rise to fame began with his acclaimed performance in Mrigayaa (1976), which won him his first National Film Award for Best Actor. He became a household name with the 1982 blockbuster Disco Dancer, the first Indian film to cross ₹1 billion at the box office. Over the years, Chakraborty has delivered iconic performances in films like Dance Dance, Pyar Jhukta Nahin, Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, and Commando, with his charisma, acting versatility, and dancing skills earning him a lasting place in the hearts of audiences.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, established in 1969, is given annually by the Directorate of Film Festivals to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the growth and development of Indian cinema. A committee of renowned figures from the film industry carefully selects the recipient, making it one of the most coveted honors in the country.
