
Mumbai is set to transform its transit system with the debut of the Aqua Line, its first-ever underground metro, starting July 24. This major development promises to revolutionize city travel, offering a faster, more efficient way to get around while easing road congestion. The initial segment of the Mumbai Metro Line 3, running between SEEPZ and Bandra Kurla Complex, marks the beginning of this landmark project. Although there was a slight delay, the full metro system is expected to be operational by December 2024, significantly enhancing Mumbai’s transportation network.
Aqua Line Route and Stations:
The 33.5 km Aqua Line will connect Aarey Colony to Cuffe Parade, with 27 stations making travel more convenient. The stations on this route include: Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CST Metro, Kalabadevi, Girgaon, Grant Road, Mumbai Central Metro, Mahalaxmi, Science Museum, Siddhivinayak, Acharya Atre Chowk, Dharavi, Worli, Dadar, Sitaladevi, BKC, Vidyanagari, Santacruz, Domestic Airport, Sahar Road, International Airport, Marol Naka, MIDC, SEEPZ, and Aarey Depot.
First Phase Details:
Today’s launch will see the Aqua Line operating between SEEPZ and BKC.
Timings and Efficiency:
Service will be start from morning 6:30 am to night 11:00 pm, with trains running frequently and running speeds up to 90 km/h. This will cut travel time for the 35 km stretch to just 50 minutes, a significant improvement over the more than two hours it typically takes by road.
Operation and Maintenance:
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been entrusted with managing the Aqua Line for the next 10 years. Their responsibilities include operating control centers, managing stations, maintaining trains, and ensuring overall safety for passengers.
With the Aqua Line 98% complete and a revised cost of ₹37,275.50 crore, the project is nearing its final stages.
Passenger Amenities:
To enhance comfort and security, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation has introduced several features, such as:
- Escalators and elevators for easy access
- Secure platforms with automatic train doors
- Extensive CCTV coverage
- Dual-entry access from road sides, eliminating the need for footbridges or road crossings
- Platform screen doors to ensure safe boarding and arriving.
