NCP’s Jayant Patil demands to make movie “Phule” Tax-Free in Maharashtra

In a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, senior NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) leader and Maharashtra MLA Jayant Patil has urged the state government to exempt the movie Phule from taxes. The film, released in theatres on April 25, is based on the lives of noted social reformers Jyotirao Govindrao Phule and Savitribai Phule.
Directed by Ananth Mahadevan, Phule portrays the struggles and contributions of the iconic couple in their fight against caste discrimination and for the right to education, especially for women. According to Patil, the movie has been well-received by audiences and should be made tax-free to ensure more people, especially students and the youth, can watch it.
In his letter to the Chief Minister, Patil emphasized that Mahatma Phule and Savitribai’s legacy goes far beyond opening water tanks for Dalits or promoting female education.
“They carried out far-reaching social reforms. Just as their work faced resistance in the 19th century, the film too has faced similar opposition in the 21st century,” he wrote, referring to the 12 scenes reportedly removed by the censor board.
Patil added, “This is a story of humanity and struggle for rights. Everyone should watch this journey. Even those spreading misinformation about the Phules should be shown the film—it will help dispel many misconceptions.”
He further stated that Phule offers a powerful visual record of the social movements that helped uplift marginalized communities.
“I urge the government to make the film tax-free so it reaches a wider audience. Personalities who shaped progressive and transformative Maharashtra deserve to be honored. Their stories should leave a lasting impression on every citizen.”
Calls to exempt Phule from entertainment tax have also emerged from other states. In Bihar, Ramesh Kushwaha, district president of the Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal, has submitted a letter to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with the same demand. Similarly, in Rajasthan, OBC Trust representatives have written to Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, urging tax exemption for the film.
Phule stars Pratik Gandhi as Jyotirao Phule and Patralekhaa in the role of Savitribai Phule. The film highlights their tireless efforts in challenging caste hierarchy and advocating equal rights for women in educatio
