
Indian parliamentary panel is expected to summon Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, following some comments made by the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the Lok Sabha election held last year. BJP lawmakers have voiced concerns over some of the statements made by Zuckerberg as they suspect interference from foreign tech companies in the election process.

The commission, which supervises the regulation of digital platforms, has called for clarification from Meta on how it plans to handle content related to the elections. Lawmakers are particularly focused on issues such as misinformation, privacy, and foreign influence on voter behavior.
India is set for the critical elections of the latter half of the year, and as this draws closer, a parliamentary committee asked Meta to clarify how it planned on handling online discourse and keeping them integrity-safe in these times. So far, Meta has no word on this publicly.
This development marks an increase in scrutiny of social media platforms in India, with the government looking to tighten regulations on their role in the political process.
