New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ukraine today, where he is expected to engage in discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict. His meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky later today will center on finding peaceful solutions to the war that has gripped the region. This visit comes just weeks after his notable trip to Moscow, which was met with criticism from the United States and several Western nations.
PM Modi traveled from Poland to Kyiv aboard the ‘Rail Force One’ train, completing 10-hour journey. He was accompanied by Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. This visit represents the concluding leg of his two-nation tour.
During his time in Kyiv, Prime Minister Modi will engage in both private and group discussions with President Zelensky, focusing on identifying paths toward a negotiated end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This is first time an Indian PM has visited Ukraine since country gained independence in 1991.
Ahead of his departure from Delhi, Modi expressed his anticipation, stating, “I look forward to continuing my dialogue with President Zelensky, strengthening our bilateral ties, and sharing insights on the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.”
India has thus far adopted a neutral approach to the Russia-Ukraine war, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy as the primary means of resolution. The Modi government has expanded India’s traditional non-alignment policy into a “multi-alignment” strategy, maintaining independent relationships with both Russia and Ukraine.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted that India could play a pivotal and positive role in helping to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
