PM Modi misses TIME100 list again

PM Modi misses TIME100: TIME magazine has released its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, and for the fourth year in a row, PM Modi has not made it to the list. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been a recurring presence in past editions of the list, is notably absent once again, even as he begins his third consecutive term in office.

This year’s exclusion marks the fourth consecutive time Modi has not appeared on the TIME 100 list. He was last included in 2021 and has previously been featured five times – in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2020, and 2021.

Modi has also been the face of TIME magazine covers on three separate occasions. His first appearance came in 2012, even before his national ascent, with the cover line: “Modi Means Business: But Can He Lead India?” – a striking profile published two years before the 2014 general elections.

He returned to the cover in 2015 under the headline “We Are Natural Allies,” during a period when India-U.S. relations were witnessing renewed momentum. Later, in 2019, another cover story titled “India’s Divider in Chief” drew attention for its critical tone, just ahead of the general elections.

TIME100 List: How does it select candidates?

The TIME 100 list is widely followed, but it is ultimately a curated editorial product, not a definitive ranking of power or leadership. Each year, TIME editors select individuals from across politics, science, arts, activism, business, and sports who have shaped major conversations or events in the past year.

Nominees are drawn from a mix of editorial suggestions, global correspondents’ input, and reader polls. The list is known to include both celebrated and controversial figures, as influence, in this context, doesn’t necessarily imply approval or admiration. It reflects the magazine’s editorial judgment on cultural and political relevance in the given year.

Factors often considered include:
• Global or regional impact
• Shaping of public discourse
• Innovation or leadership in a field
• Contributions in the past year
• Media visibility and resonance with readers

This year, the complete absence of Indian figures, not just from politics, but also from the realms of cinema, business, and social change, is a point of interest. In recent editions, several Indians had made the cut: actor Alia Bhatt and Olympic wrestler Sakshi Malik were featured last year, while the year before, Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, actor Madhuri Dixit Nene, and former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan were among the honorees.
