After days of uncertainty, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finally made its decision regarding the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The party has officially elected Devendra Fadnavis as the leader of its legislative party, and he will now take over as the state’s next Chief Minister. The decision was confirmed after a meeting of the BJP core committee, which endorsed Fadnavis’ name.

Senior BJP leader Chandrakant Patil proposed Fadnavis for the position, and the proposal was seconded by leaders like Pankaja Munde. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had earlier stated that the BJP would decide on the new CM, and he would fully support their decision. He also emphasized that there were no differences between the partners in the Mahayuti (BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP) regarding government formation.

In the recent assembly elections, the Mahayuti alliance secured a massive victory, completely defeating the opposition’s Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). With 236 seats in the 288-member assembly, the ruling coalition has retained power with a commanding two-thirds majority.

The BJP emerged as the dominant force, clinching 132 seats with an outstanding strike rate of almost 90%, marking an increase of 27 seats compared to its previous tally. Both the Shiv Sena and NCP also outshone their rivals, with Shiv Sena securing 57 seats and NCP capturing 41 seats, handing Congress its most crushing defeat in the state’s history.

With this landslide victory, the BJP is set to form the next government in Maharashtra, and Devendra Fadnavis’ return as Chief Minister is expected to bring significant political changes in the state.
