PM Modi Lands in Canada for G7 Summit, Set to Raise Global South and Terrorism Concerns

Bilateral meetings with Canadian PM, possible talks with Zelensky; G7 Outreach marks India’s growing global stature

New Delhi: June 17, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary, Canada on Tuesday morning to participate in the G7 Summit Outreach Session, marking India’s continued engagement with the world’s most advanced economies. During his 23-hour visit, the Prime Minister is expected to hold high-level meetings and deliver a strong message on global priorities of the Global South and terrorism.

PM Modi wrote on X:

“Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit. Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South.”

Sixth G7 Appearance for PM Modi

This marks India’s 12th participation in a G7 Outreach Session and the sixth for Prime Minister Modi, underlining India’s rising diplomatic influence. The country has received consistent invitations since 2019 — a testament to its growing economic and geopolitical relevance.
Notably, India’s economy now surpasses those of France, Italy, and Canada, three G7 members, according to government sources.

Packed Bilateral Agenda During Brief Visit

Though the visit is limited to less than a day, PM Modi is scheduled to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, amid strained bilateral ties in recent months.
A meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also under consideration, as global attention remains focused on the Russia-Ukraine war. However, as of Monday evening, there was no confirmation of a formal bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump.

India to Raise Terrorism, Global South Issues

In his address at the Outreach Session, PM Modi is expected to highlight the challenges faced by the Global South, particularly in the areas of debt, climate justice, and equitable development.
He is also likely to reiterate India’s long-standing call to combat terrorism, especially in light of the recent Pahalgam terror attack. New Delhi is seeking stronger international support to isolate Pakistan on the issue.

G7 Context and Strategic Importance

The G7 — comprising the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan — represents some of the world’s largest economies. While India is not a member, its repeated invitations reflect a shifting geopolitical landscape in which emerging powers are increasingly influencing global decision-making forums.

Symbolic Arrival and Diplomatic Signalling
PM Modi’s arrival was met with a formal reception at Calgary airport, with both Indian and Canadian flags displayed, and cultural elements incorporated in the welcome ceremony. The visual of the Prime Minister at the top of the aircraft stairs, waving to the delegation, was widely shared on social media, underlining the symbolic weight of the visit.
