In a significant announcement for the families of Indian soldiers recruited into the Russian military to serve on the Ukraine frontlines, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a productive meeting in Moscow on Monday. Putin has agreed to Modi’s request to release those wishing to return to India. PM Modi made the request during a private dinner the previous night. The Russian President has directed officials to act on this request following the Indian PM’s direct intervention, according to sources cited by The Hindu.
It is unclear if the leaders will make a public announcement or include the decision in a joint statement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to hold formal talks with President Putin today and will also visit an exhibition on nuclear cooperation later in the day.
There has been growing pressure on the Indian government to secure the release of several servicemen who claim they were misled by Russian operatives into enlisting. The issue gained attention when Asaduddin Owaisi, MP from Hyderabad, raised the matter after receiving complaints from his constituents. The Ministry of External Affairs admitted that there were indeed some recruitment issues.
Recent reports indicate that at least 50 Indian men are actively involved in the conflict, with four reported casualties adding to the distressing situation.
In a recent political gathering, Mr. Owaisi sharply criticized the government’s decision to send Indians into conflict zones in Russia and Israel, describing them as ‘cannon fodder.’ The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that about 9-10 individuals who contacted the Indian Embassy have been safely brought back to India, thanks to negotiations with the Kremlin. Additionally, The Hindu reported that several others have secured discharge papers and are awaiting final approval to leave the war zone.
