Raja Iqbal Singh elected as New Delhi Mayor, BJP tightens grip on city governance

New Delhi, April 25, 2025:
In a significant political development, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raja Iqbal Singh has been elected as the new Mayor of Delhi. The election, held at the Civic Centre, saw Singh secure 133 votes, while the Congress candidate received only 8. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was not contesting in the election.
With this victory, the BJP now holds a strong “triple-engine” control—at the Centre, in several states, and now firmly in the capital’s municipal body.
Raja Iqbal Singh brings extensive experience to the role. He has previously served as the Mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation and also led the opposition in the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Over the years, he has been an influential figure in Delhi’s civic politics, having served as ward committee chairman for Civil Lines Zone and as the councillor from Mukherjee Nagar ward.
Alongside Singh’s win, BJP’s Jai Bhagwan Yadav was elected unopposed as Deputy Mayor, following the withdrawal of Congress nominee Ariba Khan.
The BJP leadership hailed the victory as a step toward more integrated governance in the national capital. Party members have expressed hope that the new mayor’s tenure will bring visible improvements in urban services, particularly in areas such as sanitation, infrastructure, and digital administration.
Raja Iqbal Singh’s appointment is also seen as a consolidation of BJP’s municipal strategy, especially after the reunification of Delhi’s three former municipal bodies into a single entity.
While the Congress faced a resounding defeat and AAP remained absent from the process, the results mark a significant political moment that could reshape the civic landscape of the capital in the coming years.
