Ravichandran Ashwin, a prominent player for India known for his match-winning performances, has found himself in an interesting situation when it comes to being selected in the playing XI for away Test matches. Despite being a skilled batsman in addition to his exceptional bowling abilities, Ashwin often takes a backseat to Ravindra Jadeja in the pecking order, especially in Test matches played in countries like South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia (SENA). This scenario was evident even in the World Test Championship final against Australia. While Ashwin had readied himself to participate in the title-deciding match in England, the spot for the sole spinner was given to Jadeja. When questioned about his frequent absence in such crucial games, Ashwin responded by stating that he isn’t inclined to search for an explanation since team selection isn’t within his control.
“I find it unwise to attempt to discover an answer… It’s illogical for me to ponder over the reasons behind the decisions and how the situation could have been different. An alternative perspective is to consider how few players have participated in 94 Test matches. I’m content that I’ve achieved that milestone. Recently, the circumstances have led to Ravindra Jadeja and myself being the two quality spinners who also possess batting prowess. Jadeja’s impressive form with the bat has been a determining factor in his selection. I don’t wish to speculate or delve into the reasons for my omission, as that is not something I have authority over…” he explained during an interview with the Times of India.
Ashwin further expressed that even if he isn’t part of the playing team, his priority is India’s victory.
“Starting from the 2018-19 period, during which I underwent a mental and physical transformation, I’ve tried to distance myself from negativity. In the dressing room, I’ve found ways to contribute positively. If my ego were to dominate, I’d become a hindrance to the team, which I’m keen to avoid. When I’m on the field, I play with the intention to win, and when I’m not, I wholeheartedly support India’s success,” added the experienced off-spinner.
