Deadly Russian Airstrikes in Kyiv Target British Council and EU Delegation, Kills 14

Updated At: August 28, 2025 3:44 PM

Russia’s overnight missile and drone strikes on Kyiv hit the EU Delegation and British Council, killing 14, including children, and injuring many.

On the night of August 27–28, 2025, Kyiv faced a large-scale assault as missiles and drones hit over 20 locations throughout the city. The strikes impacted residential buildings, a shopping mall, and significant institutional sites like the European Union Delegation and the British Council office, leading to at least 14 deaths, among them three children, and numerous injuries.

Diplomatic and Civilian Targets Hit

The European Union Delegation suffered heavy structural damage when the shockwave from a missile strike hit close to its building, while the British Council also sustained considerable damage to their office. Thankfully, there were no reported casualties among EU or UK staff. These attacks have raised serious concerns about the intentional targeting of diplomatic missions amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Leadership Condemns Attack

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes as calculated acts of terror against both civilians and diplomatic entities. He urged the international community to respond decisively against Russia, advocating for stricter sanctions and emphasising the importance of steadfast support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

European Leaders Denounce Violation of International Law

EU leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen and Kaja Kallas, have denounced the attacks as clear violations of international law. They underscored the precariousness of ongoing peace efforts and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine through governance, humanitarian aid, and diplomatic initiatives.

The escalation raises global alarms

The airstrikes that occurred overnight were among the most extensive on Kyiv since recent international summits to help stabilise the region. The impact has been felt beyond civilian areas to necessary diplomatic institutions, demonstrating the growing risks to innocents and international personnel in combat zones.

International Community Called to Action

In reaction to the escalation, Ukraine has called upon the international community to act swiftly and responsibly. International observers and allied nations have been asked to denounce the attack, bolster their support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and strengthen the protection of non-combatants and diplomatic missions.
