
India’s Samudrayaan Mission: A ₹600 Crore Deep-Sea Leap to Unveil Ocean Mysteries

India is taking a giant leap in ocean exploration with the Samudrayaan Mission, an ambitious deep-sea venture funded with ₹600 crore in the Union Budget 2025. Announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, this mission aims to explore the uncharted depths of the ocean using advanced manned submarines. Scientists will descend into the abyss to unlock mysteries of the deep sea, discovering invaluable biological resources and minerals that could revolutionize environmental conservation and resource management.

Massive Boost for Deep-Sea Research
The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has received a significant budget increase, with an allocation of ₹3,649.81 crore, up from ₹3,064.80 crore in the previous year. This funding is set to accelerate India’s deep-sea missions, foster cutting-edge marine technology, and enhance scientific capabilities.
Diving 6,000 Meters Below the Ocean’s Surface
The highlight of the Samudrayaan Mission is the development of a state-of-the-art manned submersible that will plunge 6,000 meters into the ocean’s depths. This mission is expected to unlock hidden secrets of the deep sea, aiding in the sustainable utilization of marine resources, deep-sea minerals, and oceanic thermal energy. Engineers are also working on next-gen underwater robotics to assist in deep-sea mining and biodiversity studies.
₹1,329 Crore Allocated for ‘Mission Mausam’
Alongside deep-sea exploration, the government has earmarked ₹1,329 crore for ‘Mission Mausam’, a project aimed at revolutionizing weather forecasting. With the use of AI, machine learning, advanced radars, and satellite technology, this mission is expected to provide unprecedented accuracy in weather predictions. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 14, ‘Mission Mausam’ seeks to modernize the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
