Olympian Shivpal Singh faces new doping charge, could be banned for 8 years

Indian javelin thrower Shivpal Singh, who once represented India on the grand stage of the Tokyo Olympics, is now staring at a possible 8-year ban after testing positive for a banned substance, his second doping offence.
The 29-year-old athlete reportedly failed an out-of-competition drug test conducted earlier this year while training at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala. Following the test, NADA has provisionally suspended him as the investigation moves forward.
This second strike under WADA and NADA rules means Shivpal is looking at a much harsher penalty — potentially a ban long enough to end his professional career.
A source familiar with the situation confirmed the development, saying, “Yes, he has tested positive again. It’s his second offence.”
Once considered one of India’s top javelin hopefuls, Shivpal had a breakthrough moment in 2019 when he won silver at the Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, throwing a personal best of 86.23 meters.
But controversy first struck in 2021, when he was banned for testing positive for a banned steroid. Though initially suspended for four years, his ban was cut to just one year in January 2023 after the NADA Appeals Panel accepted his explanation that the failed test was caused by contaminated supplements.
Shivpal returned to action in April 2023, winning bronze at the National Inter-State Championships and later taking gold at the National Games in Goa, signs of a promising comeback.
