The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has issued a comprehensive notification for the Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination in 2024. All candidates, regardless of gender, are urged to carefully review the examination rules as notified by the Ministry of Mines and the accompanying examination notice. It is essential for applicants to ensure they meet all eligibility criteria for admission to the examination. Admission at all stages of the examination is provisional and contingent upon satisfying the specified eligibility requirements.
Candidates must submit their applications online through the website https://upsconline.nic.in. To begin the application process, candidates must first register themselves on the One Time Registration (OTR) platform available on the Commission’s website. The deadline for submitting online applications is October 10, 2023. Eligible candidates will receive an e-Admission Certificate approximately three weeks before the examination commencement date. This certificate will be available for download on the UPSC website [https://upsconline.nic.in].
The UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination 2024 consists of three consecutive stages:
Stage-I: Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination (Objective type) with two papers to select candidates for the Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination. Marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination will contribute to the final merit.
Stage II: Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination (Descriptive Type) with three papers to select candidates for the Personality Test (Stage-III). Marks secured in the Main Examination will determine the final merit.
Stage-III: Personality Test/Interview
Applications are currently being accepted for the Preliminary Examination only. Candidates who are declared qualified in the Preliminary Examination by the Commission will be eligible to participate in the Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination, which is scheduled for June 22, 2024.
Eligibility Criteria for UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination 2024:
Candidates must meet the following minimum educational qualification for Geologist Group ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India:
A Master’s degree in Geology, Applied Geology Geological Science Geo-Exploration, Marine Geology, Mineral Exploration, Engineering Geology, Earth Science and Resource Management, Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies, Petroleum Geosciences, or Geochemistry from a recognized university or educational institution as per the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
Age Limit for UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination 2024:
Candidates must fulfill the age criteria as follows:
For Geologist, Geophysicist, and Chemist (Group ‘A’) in the Geological Survey of India, a candidate must be at least 21 years old and not more than 32 years old as of January 1, 2024. In other words, the candidate must have been born between January 2, 1992, and January 1, 2003.

It’s important to register on the One Time Registration (OTR) platform on the Commission’s website before filling out the online application. OTR registration is a one-time process that can be done at any time during the year. If a candidate is already registered, they can proceed directly to complete the online application for the examination.
