Man, Harassed by Loan Shark, Resorts to Putting His ‘Son for Sale’ in Aligarh

In Aligarh, a 45-year-old man found himself in dire straits due to harassment by a loan shark. In a desperate attempt to alleviate his financial woes, he resorted to an alarming action – he attempted to ‘sell’ his minor son by displaying a sign that read, ‘My son for sale.’ This unsettling incident unfolded at the Roadways bus stand in Aligarh, where the distressed father, along with his family, sat with a placard hanging from his neck, bearing the words, “My son is available for sale; I want to sell him.” Reports suggest that the father was seeking buyers willing to pay anywhere from Rs 6 to Rs 8 lakh for his child.
The man in question, Rajkumar, who works as an e-rickshaw driver in Aligarh, had allegedly been subjected to relentless harassment by his moneylender. This compelled him to take this drastic step, sitting with his son, daughter, and wife at the bus stand. According to a report from TOI, Rajkumar had initially borrowed Rs. 50,000 from an individual named Chandrapal Singh to purchase a property. However, the moneylender resorted to manipulation, effectively turning Rajkumar into a perpetual borrower, causing him to lose not only his money but also the property he had sought to acquire.
Rajkumar recounted his ordeal, saying, “The moneylender frequently subjected me to humiliation in front of my children. He even evicted me and my family from our home. My e-rickshaw, the sole source of livelihood for my family, was seized. I’ve been visiting the local police station for days in pursuit of justice, but no FIR was filed,” claimed Rajkumar.

He also mentioned that he had already repaid Rs 6,000 to the moneylender and was making earnest efforts to settle the remaining debt, as per the publication’s report.
Aligarh Police took to their official social media account to provide some insight, stating, “Rajkumar had borrowed Rs. 50,000 from a relative, and there was a dispute between them regarding the repayment of the money. Yesterday, the matter was resolved with the consent of both parties. The area officer’s statement confirms this.”
In the midst of this alarming incident, Samajwadi Party (SP) Chief Akhilesh Yadav, speaking to X, criticized the government in Uttar Pradesh. He expressed his dismay, saying, “This is the ‘amrit kaal’ (dark times) of the BJP when a father is compelled to sell his son. Before this image tarnishes the reputation of the state and the country worldwide, someone within the government should take immediate action.”
